Montalbano Locations: Montelusa and Vigata Sicily Map & Guide

Sicily is an excellent tourist destination, but it has also been the place for filming famous movies and TV series such as The Godfather, The White Lotus, Il Commissario Montalbano, known in the English-speaker countries as Inspector Montalbano or Detective Montalbano, etc. Montalbano TV series is almost entirely shot on location where the story takes place and not in a studio. Even places that may look like a studio, like Vigata Police Station, are actually public buildings, so there isn’t much staging in the episodes. In this post, we bring you a complete guide with all the Inspector Montalbano Locations loaded in our map, so you can find all the stunning Sicilian filming locations where Montalbano was shot (and still is shot), including the name of the episode and the directions to quickly reach and access them, as we did it when traveling in Sicily.

The filming locations of Montalbano that tourists can visit and followed by Italy’s most famous police detective are located in the Sicilian provinces of Ragusa, Agrigento, Trapani, Syracuse, and Messina.

Visit Sicily and discover all the Inspector Montalbano places to visit by yourself. Let’s start!

That was an unforgettable experience, not to mention that Sicily is stunning. Every corner is beauty and art (and delicious food).

We know the exact address and how to get there because we did, as you will see in our photos. In this post, we share the interactive map with all the Inspector Montalbano Filming Locations to visit and the necessary information to enter. You may say this is the Montalbano Sicily Map, but maybe more accurate to say it is the Montelusa and Vigata Sicily Map.

In addition, we mention those places that have access for people with reduced mobility. We know that in these cases, it is not easy to visit Sicily, which despite its large elderly population, it is still unprepared for including people with reduced mobility.

Montalbano Police Station Location in Scicli

Scicli is indeed a picturesque town in the province of Ragusa. Walking through its streets, you want to take pictures of everything. It is one of those small Sicilian towns full of art and culture without being ostentatious like Palermo. In addition to the numerous filming locations of Inspector Montalbano in Scicli that we will talk about in the following paragraphs, it has lovely beaches just 20 minutes away.

Where are Montalbano Police Station and Montelusa Police Headquarters Located?

If you watch Inspector Montalbano, I’m sure you would like to visit Montalbano Police Station and Montelusa Headquarters. So, where are located?

The most surprising thing is that the Montalbano Police Station is a 100% real place you can visit. Not only can you visit, you can stroll around Salvo’s desk, see the work area of agent Agatino Cattarella, and also visit the office of the Chief of Police, Bonetti Alderighi (the Questore), on the second floor.

Inspector Montalbano House Location

Where is Inspector Montalbano House located in Marinella? Marinella is a fictional city that moves from the books of Andrea Camilleri to the television series in Punta Secca, near Santa Croce Camerina, about 20–30 minutes by car or bus from the centre of Ragusa. This place is known as “La Casa di Montalbano” in Italian.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the house was a warehouse for drying fish. In 1904, the Quattro family bought it and transformed it into the beautiful place of Montalbano, partially adapted during the filming of Ins Montalbano and Il Giovane Montalbano. In addition, the house of Montalbano works as a bed and breakfast when there are no shooting sessions.

After an Inspector Montalbano filming session in October 2022, we visit and spend the night inside the famed Salvo Montalbano’s House. Observing how the B&B was transformed throughout the filming was fascinating. Tourists have breakfast on the terrace before heading downstairs for a swim.

How to enter the house of Montalbano: You can visit inside only if you stay at least two nights in Montalbano’s B&B that works there. However, if enough for you to see the whole house from the outside, you can sunbathe on the beach, swim as Montalbano swims, and enjoy the traditional Italian Aperol Spritz cocktail from the Torre Scalambri Bar (TOSCA) overlooking Montalbano’s house.

Montalbano’s Restaurant in Punta Secca

Montalbano’s favourite restaurant is Enzo’s Trattoria from the TV series Inspector Montalbano. In each episode, we see Salvo delight with typical Sicilian dishes, pasta rich in seafood, and fish Enzo’s wife prepares.

This Inspector Montalbano filming location is actually an authentic restaurant called “Enzo a Mare“, located a few blocks from his house in Punta Secca.

Inspector Montalbano Locations in Ragusa Superiore

For me, the city of Ragusa is the most important place of all the Montalbano filming locations because countless scenes are filmed there. In addition, Ragusa is a beautiful city where you eat unique typical Sicilian dishes.

One of the Sicilian provinces is Ragusa. Ragusa City is “divided” into the oldest part of the city, called Ragusa Ibla (or Ragusa Inferiore), and the part built after the earthquake, Ragusa Superiore, or downtown Ragusa. Our map features all of Inspector Montalbano’s filming sites. It will significantly help in finding the precise location of each location.

Let’s see some of the Inspector Montalbano locations in Ragusa Superiore.

Piazza San Giovanni and Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist of Ragusa

Piazza San Giovanni and the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista) of Ragusa, located in the historic city centre of Ragusa, are among the many Montalbano sites appearing in the episode The Potter’s Field.

Old Bridge of Ragusa (Ponte Vecchio)

Just 200 meters from San Giovanni Battista Cathedral, the Old Bridge of Ragusa called Ponte Vecchio is one of the Inspector Montalbano locations to visit in Ragusa. In the first episode, The Snack Thief , several scenes are shot on the Ponte Vecchio of Ragusa.

People’s Square (Piazza del Popolo) in Ragusa

The People’s Square (Piazza del Popolo), near the railway station of Ragusa, is another of the Montalbano Locations that is seen in the episode “A Trip to Tindari” and is where appears the body of Nene Sanfilippo, killed in front of his house, and from where Salvo begins a new investigation.

Where is the Piazza del Popolo in Ragusa: Via Dante Alighieri, 99, 97100, Ragusa, RG, Sicily, Italy.

Post Office Building and Municipality of Ragusa

The Post Office building in front of the Municipality of Ragusa (Corso Italia 72) is called the Post Office Palace of Ragusa (Palazzo delle Poste), which is more accurate when you are in front of it.

montalbano locations in ragusa

The Municipality of Ragusa and The Palazzo delle Poste are two other Montalbano Locations to visit near the Piazza San Giovanni and on the road to Ragusa Ibla.

The Post Office Palace in Ragusa is the background to the scene when the journalist Nicolò Zito tells of the discovery of the body of the late engineer Luparello, in the episode “The Shape of Water”.

Once again, in the episode “The Scent of the Night a corner of the Post Office Palace returns to the scene when Salvo waits outside the house of Michela Manganaro, the assistant of a scammer from Vigata who is investigated. Michela’s house was set in an office of the Town Hall in the street via Rapisardi.

Church of St. Mary of The Stairs and Montalbano’s Staircase

Where is Montalbano’s staircase? The Church of St. Mary of The Stairs (Santa Maria delle Scale) and its long staircase, which divides Ragusa Superiore from Ragusa Ibla, are other Montalbano Locations to visit in Ragusa that appear in various episodes.

In “The Voice of the Violin” Salvo descends the staircase in the direction of Ragusa Ibla while investigating the death of Michela Licalzi.

Montalbano and Fazio climb the stairs of the Church of Santa Maria delle Scale in the episode “The Goldfinch and the Cat” while investigating a series of strange robberies that occurred in Vigata with a thief on a motorcycle that kills an elderly woman named Emilia while wearing a black helmet.

Similarly, the long stairs appear on stage in the episode “A Delicate Matter. More recently, in “The Catalanotti Method” Mimì and Salvo are in the scene’s foreground, and Ragusa Ibla is in the background of the shot.

It’s called the Cava Gonfalone, and it’s in Ragusa. After receiving the results of the autopsy of two victims for silica dust in the lungs, Salvo is taken to an abandoned stone quarry, the Gonfalone Quarry, approaching the case’s resolution.

The Cave of the Trabacche (Grotta delle Trabacche) is another Inspector Montalbano filming location in Ragusa and appears in the episode “The Mystery of the Terracotta Dog.

Trabacche (plural), Trabacca (singular), in Sicilian dialect, means a bed adorned with curtains to which the two monolithic sarcophagi that stand in the middle of the cavern, also serving as vault supports, resemble. Together with other tombs in the area, they represent one of the few remaining vestiges of Byzantine rule. Its remains date back to the fourth century.

Where is the Grotta delle Trabacche: Strada Provinciale SP13, km 3,800, 97100 Ragusa RG, Italy. It is 15 minutes drive from the center of Ragusa. Fornace Penna of Sampieri (Ragusa), Sicily as Inspector Montalbano Filming Location.

In Inspector Montalbano’s book series, Camilleri describes this place, which he called “La mànnara” in Italian, as located on the outskirts of Vigata, near the sea, where the ruins of an old chemical factory are located. The area is dominated by Gegè, who runs a network of drugs and prostitution. The setting described in Camilleri’s books as La mànnara was recreated at the Fornace Penna in Sampiere, near Scicli. Fornace Penna was an ancient brick factory until 1924.

The first episode of Montalbano in which we see the Fornace Penna of Sampieri in the scene is when the lifeless body of the engineer Luparello is found inside his car in the episode “The Shape of Water“.

From Modica is only 20 minutes by car and is an excellent option to get close to the beaches of Marina di Modica, Pozzallo, and Ispica (other Montalbano Locations) and continue climbing towards Marina di Ragusa and Punta Secca.

The structure of the Fornace Penna is one of the most popular Montalbano locations for tourists in Sicily.

Inspector Montalbano Locations in Ispica (Ragusa)

On several occasions, Salvo Montalbano is in Ispica in Ragusa province, looking for vital information to solve its cases. Here are the Inspector Montalbano Locations in Ispica.

The St. Mary Major Square (Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore) in Ispica is shown in a beautiful frame in the middle of the “Paper Moon” episode. Salvo drives his car to a part of the square, then stops and looks for a jeweller to whom he will ask many questions.

The episode “The Safety Net” also shows the square. At the same time, a Swedish company shoots a costume film in front of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Vigata.

In the episode “Track of Sand“, Montalbano walks near Piazza Santissima Annunziata with his right-hand man, Inspector Fazio. The two walk while discussing clandestine races and the mafia, with the beautiful church behind them.

We will see it in the episode “The Wings of the Sphinx“. An elderly gentleman will call Montalbano into the church to hear a “confession”.

The most attentive will also have noticed the Bruno-Belmonte Palace, overlooking Piazza Santissima Annunziata. In the episodeThe Spider’s Patience”, Montalbano enters the palace, climbs the stairs, and heads to the rooms for a practical interrogation.

Suppose you must head to Palermo or Trapani International Airport after visiting Ragusa and Agrigento. Seeing the Mangiapane Cave in Trapani may be a good option for touring Montalbano locations.

The Mangiapane Cave in Custonaci is the cave we see in the first episode of Inspector Montalbano, “The Snack Thief“. Located a 3-hour drive from the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, this cave consists of a massive cleft in the rock that houses a village of houses where the town’s traditional living nativity scene is held every year during the Christmas season. The cave is in Contrada Scurati, in Custonaci, province of Trapani.
