Overview of Inspector Montalbano The Catalanotti Method Episode 37 Season 15 (Episode 1)

Montalbano’s Season 15 kicks off when Mimi Augello (Cesare Bocci) visits his lover when the woman’s husband unexpectedly returns to the apartment. He descends the window and enters the flat below, but danger follows him. He discovers a corpse on the bed in the shadows.

Salvo Montalbano (Luca Zingaretti) is awakened in the middle of the night by a knock on his door. His subordinate investigator and perpetual lady’s man Mimi Augello appears to have come across a corpse while leaving the residence of his most recent mistress. Mimi doesn’t report the corpse because he doesn’t want his wife or the woman’s husband to find out about the affair. Instead, he rushes to Montalbano and places the blame squarely at his feet.

As a devoted friend would, Salvo muses on a strategy to “find” the body the next day so that they may solve the murder without alluding to Mimi’s late-night antics.

However, shortly after, when the first corpse disappears and a second one arrives, the issue gets more challenging. Connection? Perhaps. Carmelo Catalanotti, a bourgeois theatrical director with a bad reputation for the acting technique he created for his actors, is the victim.

This second victim was a part-time loan shark and amateur theatrical director, and possibly his attacker was drawn to him by the way he selected local performers for his auditions.

Are the two deaths connected? Catalanotti scrupulously kept notes and comments on all the actors he worked with and strange notebooks full of figures, dates, and names. Salvo discovers all of Catalanotti’s plays, dossiers, character notes, and notes on his most recent play, called Dangerous Turn. The theater is where he will find the solution.

A third case, albeit not a homicide, emerges from the Vigata crime scene for good measure. Instead, an unidentified attacker shoots a young guy in the leg while leaving his residence for work. Detective Montalbano starts to weave together the elements of the three crimes into a cohesive whole.

Regulars from Vigata police station Catarella (Angelo Russo) and Fazio (Peppino Mazzotta), are there, with Catarella adding his trademark fun by mispronouncing names and Fazio bringing rationality to the fore when things start to go wrong.

Camilleri, a well-known stage and television director in Italy before he retired and started writing this series, bares his soul along the road as he introduces us to various knowledge about Italian theater that unveils new aspects of Montalbano.

Montalbano quickly learns that the victim was a loan shark, but one who was “fair” in his own way or at least wasn’t charging too much. But Catalanotti was not only a usurer. He was, above all, a genuine and original theater artist, soul, and founder of Trinacriarte, a very active amateur theater company in Vigata. Trinacriarte is not simple amateur dramatics. Most of its members are literally possessed by the theatre’s passion, if not included. Carmelo Catalanotti was the guru of such adepts. Montalbano knows that his very private and unsettling Method has the key to unlocking the riddle of his demise.

Catalanotti, applying his particular Method, became his guru, as bright as sadistic and cruel, so much so that Montalbano will realize that precisely in his own art, in his disturbing Method, lies the solution to the mystery of his death.

Despite complicating Montalbano’s predicament, introducing a new female character—the incredibly gorgeous and capable chief of forensics—Antonia Nicoletti—helps solve the crimes. She arrives during a trying time for Montalbano and the former Livia of Genoa.

In his crush with the intriguing Antonia Nicoletti (Greta Scarano), Montalbano’s discomfort with the other sex is on the whole comedic show. His relationship with his capricious lifelong love, Livia (Sonia Bergamasco), further complicates matters.

Antonia appreciates “other activities,” enjoys discussing the case with Montalbano outside of work, and shares his love of eating.

Salvo Montalbano falls under Antonia’s spell. The breaking point is evident soon after Livia’s call: Livia is exhausted and wants to regain control of her life. She wants to decide to concentrate on herself for once instead of succumbing to Salvo’s unstable moods.

Unexpectedly, Montalbano does not challenge or try to convince her to change her mind; on the contrary, his resolute silence indicates that the time has come to set her free and begin a new chapter in his relationship with Antonia.

Following this unexpected separation between Montalbano and Livia, outrage erupted on social media. Except for Antonia, the marriage has survived many hardships. Despite this, she does not want to work with Salvo.

Ultimately, she backs down and chooses to give the detective a chance. After twenty years of love, the commissioner secretly separates from Livia as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Their connection motivates Salvo to remake himself and gives a surprising episode end.

Inspector Montalbano Season 15 Episode 37, “The Catalanotti Method,” was meticulously crafted to keep audiences guessing until the end.

For the benefit of devoted fans, Camilleri did not abandon his characters to roam in search of a writer: this is not the series’ final book, nor the last Inspector Montalbano episode.

The Catalanotti Method delves into several profound themes that resonate with viewers on a deeper level. One of the central themes explored in this episode is the destructive power of family secrets. As Montalbano uncovers the hidden truths within the Catalanotti family, he witnesses firsthand the devastating consequences that decades of secrecy can have on individuals and their relationships.
